How do I test my microphone online?
Open the mic test, press Start mic test and allow the microphone. Speak normally: the level meter should rise. Press Record 5 seconds to hear yourself back. Nothing leaves your device.

- Open the mic test and press Start mic test.
- Choose Allow when your browser asks to use the microphone.
- Speak normally. The waveform moves and the status says your microphone is working.
- Have more than one microphone? Pick the right one from the Microphone list.
- Press Record 5 seconds, say something and listen back.
Questions and fixes
It can’t use my microphone
Your browser asks for permission the first time. If you pressed Block, click the padlock or settings icon at the left of the address bar, set Microphone to Allow and reload the page. Also check your device’s privacy settings allow your browser to use the microphone, and close other apps (such as Teams or Zoom) that might be using it.
The level hardly moves
If it stays below about −50 dB when you talk, the microphone is muted or very quiet. Turn up its input level in your system sound settings, check any mute switch on a headset cable, or move closer.
It warns about clipping
Your voice is too loud for the input and will sound distorted. Move back a little or turn the input level down.
