Mic test

Check your microphone is working, see how loud it is, and hear a short recording of yourself. Everything stays on your device.

Press Start, then allow microphone access when your browser asks.

How to test your microphone

  1. Press Start mic test. Your browser asks for permission to use the microphone; choose Allow.
  2. Speak normally. The green waveform should move and the level meter should rise. When we pick up sound, the status says your microphone is working.
  3. If you have more than one microphone (a headset and a built-in mic, say), choose the right one from the Microphone list.
  4. Press Record 5 seconds, say something, then listen back to check it sounds clear.

Microphone not working? Try this

Windows

Open Settings → System → Sound and choose your microphone under Input. Check its volume, and in Privacy & security → Microphone make sure microphone access is on for apps and for your browser. Some headsets have a mute switch or button on the cable.

Mac

Go to System Settings → Sound → Input, pick your microphone and watch the input level as you speak. Then check Privacy & Security → Microphone and allow your browser.

iPhone and iPad

Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and allow your browser, or check Settings → Safari → Microphone. Remove any case that covers the microphone holes at the bottom.

Android

Open Settings → Apps → your browser → Permissions and allow the microphone. Clear any fluff from the microphone hole with a soft brush.

If you blocked the browser's permission by mistake, click the microphone or padlock icon in the address bar, set the microphone to Allow and reload the page.

Your privacy

The test runs entirely in your browser. Sound is analysed on your device, the 5-second recording is kept in memory only so you can play it back, and nothing is sent to us or anyone else. The microphone switches off when you press Stop or leave the page.

Questions and answers

How do I know if my mic is working?

Press Start mic test and allow access. If the waveform moves and the status says it can hear you, your microphone works. Record 5 seconds to check it sounds clear.

Why does the test say no microphone was found?

The browser can't see a microphone. Check it is plugged in, switched on and not muted, and that it is selected as the input in your system sound settings.

Is my recording uploaded or saved?

No. The recording stays in your browser's memory so you can play it back, and it disappears when you leave the page.

Why does my mic sound distorted?

It is probably clipping, meaning the sound is too loud for the input. If the meter hits red, move back from the mic or lower its input level.

My mic works here but not in Zoom or Teams. Why?

The call app may be set to a different microphone. In the app's audio settings, choose the same microphone you selected here, and check the app has microphone permission.

Does this work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in Safari, Chrome and other up-to-date mobile browsers. You will be asked to allow microphone access.
