The short version
- Every test runs in your browser. The sound from your microphone, the picture from your camera and the keys you press are never sent to us.
- Test recordings and snapshots stay on your device. We can't see them.
- There are no accounts, sign-ups or forms. We don't ask for your name or email address.
- Your browser remembers a few things for you, such as your language and your best scores. That stays on your device.
- Adverts from Google keep the site free. In the UK, the EU and Switzerland, Google only uses cookies for personalised ads if you say yes. You can change your mind at any time.
- Questions? Email info@devicecheck.online.
Who we are
This website, devicecheck.online ("DeviceCheck"), is run by Mark Davies (47 Ravenswood Road, London SW12 9PN), an individual based in England, United Kingdom ("we", "us"). For data protection law, we are the "controller" of the small amount of personal data described here. That means we decide how it is used. You can reach us at info@devicecheck.online.
What happens when you use a test
Microphone and camera
When you start the mic or webcam test, your browser asks for your permission. If you say yes, the sound or picture is processed by your own device, inside your browser. It is not uploaded to us or to anyone else.
A test recording is kept only in your browser's memory so you can play it back. A webcam snapshot is saved straight to your device's downloads if you ask for one. When you stop the test or close the page, the browser stops using your microphone or camera and the recording in memory is gone.
Keyboard, mouse, controller and the other tests
Key presses, clicks, scrolls, controller buttons and reaction times are handled by the page in your browser. We don't log them or send them anywhere. Results are shown on your screen and nowhere else.
Information stored on your device
Your browser's local storage keeps a few small things so the site works the way you left it:
- the language you chose, which also stops the automatic language choice from switching or asking again;
- whether you said "No thanks" when we offered a page in your language;
- the keyboard layout you picked in the keyboard tester;
- your best scores in the click speed, spacebar and reaction time tests.
To suggest a language, the page reads your browser's preferred languages. This check happens in your browser. These items are never sent to us. You can see the full list, and how to clear it, on our cookies and local storage page.
Server logs
The site is hosted by GoDaddy. Like almost every web host, its servers keep standard logs when your browser asks for a page. These show your IP address, the browser and operating system your browser reports, the page asked for, the page you came from, and the date and time.
The logs are used to keep the site secure (for example, to spot attacks) and to fix problems. We don't use them to identify you or to build a profile of you. They are kept for a limited period set by our host and then deleted.
Advertising
We show adverts from Google AdSense to pay for the site.
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this website or other websites.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
- You can opt out of personalised advertising in Google's Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some other vendors' use of cookies for personalised advertising at www.aboutads.info.
- Read how Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services.
Your choice
If you visit from the UK, the European Economic Area or Switzerland, a consent message from Google appears on your first visit. Google certifies this kind of message for its ads. You can accept, refuse or choose what to allow. The tests work exactly the same whatever you choose.
If you don't agree to personalised ads, Google may still show non-personalised ads. These are based on things like the page you are viewing and your rough location (for example your city), not on your past browsing. They may still use cookies or similar technology to limit how often you see an ad and to fight fraud. Where the law needs your consent for that, the consent message asks for it.
You can change your choice at any time with the Privacy and cookie settings link at the bottom of every page.
When an ad is shown, Google receives information such as your IP address, details of your browser and device, the page you are on, and its cookie identifiers. Google decides how it uses this information for its own purposes. See Google's privacy policy.
If you email us
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you write. We use it only to reply and to help you. We don't add you to any mailing list. We keep emails only as long as we need them to deal with your message, and then delete them.
Why we use information (our lawful bases)
- Server logs and site security: our legitimate interests in running a safe, working website.
- Personalised ads and advertising cookies: your consent, where the law requires it (the UK, the EEA and Switzerland). You can withdraw it at any time.
- Non-personalised ads: our legitimate interests in paying for a free website with ads that don't track you.
- Replying to your emails: our legitimate interests in answering you.
- Settings and scores on your device: these never reach us. The law lets websites store things like this without asking, because they only remember choices you made or features you used.
Who else receives information
- GoDaddy, our web host, which handles server logs for us.
- Google, for adverts and the consent message.
- Our email provider, if you write to us.
We don't sell your personal data, and we don't share it with anyone else unless the law requires us to.
Information sent outside the UK
Google and our web host may process data in the United States and other countries. When they do, it is protected by recognised safeguards. These include the UK–US "data bridge", the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, or standard contractual clauses approved by the UK and EU.
How long things are kept
- Settings and best scores on your device: until you clear them. The short note we keep after an automatic language switch is deleted straight away, or when you close the tab.
- Server logs: for a limited period set by our host.
- Google's advertising and consent cookies: usually up to 13 months. See the cookies page.
- Emails: only as long as we need them to help you.
Children
DeviceCheck is a general website for everyone. It is not aimed at children. Anyone can use the tests safely, though. There are no accounts, no chat, nothing to post, and nothing from your camera or microphone ever leaves your device.
We don't knowingly collect personal information from children, and we collect almost nothing from anyone. In line with the US Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), we don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
If you are under 13, please ask a parent or carer to help you with the consent message. The safest choice is to say no to personalised ads. The tests work just the same.
If you are a parent or carer and think your child has sent us personal information, email us and we will delete it.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018), and the EU GDPR if you are in the EU, you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
- ask us to correct it if it is wrong;
- ask us to delete it;
- ask us to limit how we use it;
- object to how we use it, including where we rely on legitimate interests;
- ask for your data in a form you can take elsewhere (portability);
- withdraw your consent at any time, using the Privacy and cookie settings link.
Wherever you live, you can ask us about your data. Email info@devicecheck.online. It's free, and we will reply within one month. We hold very little, so we may not be able to find anything that identifies you. For example, we can't usually link a server log line to a person. Your ad choices are managed by Google, using the links above.
If you are unhappy with how we have used your data, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113. If you live in the EU, you can also complain to your local data protection authority. We'd be grateful for the chance to put things right first, so please contact us.
The law we follow
We follow the UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018 and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), as amended by the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025. We also follow the EU GDPR for visitors in the EU. Under these rules, advertising cookies need your consent. Storage that is strictly necessary, or that only remembers your own choices, does not.
Keeping information safe
The site is served over an encrypted connection (HTTPS). The best protection is collecting as little as possible, and we collect almost nothing.
Changes to this policy
If we change how the site uses data, we will update this page and the date at the top.
