What the blackout screen does

The blackout screen fills your display with pure black and then gets out of the way: the mouse pointer hides after a second and a half, and the exit hint fades to almost nothing. To anyone looking, the screen appears to be off, but your computer, phone or tablet keeps working in the background.

People use it to:

How to use it

  1. Choose whether to keep the screen awake. Leave it ticked if you don't want your device to lock or sleep.
  2. Pick a sleep timer if you want the blackout to end on its own.
  3. Press Black out screen. To come back, press Esc, or double-click or double-tap anywhere.

Moving the mouse briefly shows the pointer again, then it hides once more. On a phone, a single tap shows a faint reminder of how to exit.

Keeping the screen awake relies on your browser's wake lock. Most up-to-date browsers support it on a page you're actively viewing, but battery saver or low-power modes can still put the device to sleep.

Blackout screen versus switching the display off

Most computers can switch the display off after a few minutes, but that usually also starts the countdown to sleep, and waking the screen means pressing a key or moving the mouse. The blackout screen keeps the computer fully awake and running while the screen shows nothing at all. It is also handy on devices that can't turn their display off on demand, such as some smart TVs, tablets used as music players, or a laptop connected to speakers.

Questions and answers

How do I make my screen black but keep my computer on?

Press Black out screen on this page. The display shows only black and the pointer disappears, while everything else keeps running. Press Esc to return.

Is the blackout screen the same as turning the monitor off?

Not quite. The screen is still on but showing black. On OLED screens that is nearly the same as off; on LCD screens the backlight is still lit, so some glow may show in a dark room.

Will my music keep playing?

Yes. Music, videos in other tabs, downloads and anything else running on your device carry on as normal.

Why did my screen go to sleep anyway?

Battery saver or your system power settings can override the browser wake lock. Plug in your device or change its sleep settings.
