Why use an orange screen?
- An evening light. Orange light has almost no blue in it, so a dim orange screen is a softer choice than white for reading lights or a bedside glow late in the evening.
- Cosy mood lighting. Orange gives a sunset or firelight feel, good for films, gatherings or a relaxing corner.
- Photography. A tablet showing orange makes an easy "golden hour" fill light for portraits and products.
- Colour checks. Orange is mostly red with some green. Uneven patches on an orange screen can reveal problems with your display's backlight or colour balance.
How to use it
Press Start orange screen or click the preview. Dim it with the brightness slider, or the up and down arrow keys while it's full screen. Choose a deeper amber or a lighter peach with the colour picker. Press Esc or double-click to leave.
If you're using it as a night light, set the sleep timer so it switches off by itself, and keep the screen awake so it doesn't lock part-way through.
Using orange as a reading or bedside light
For reading, place the screen to one side and slightly behind you, pointing at the page rather than your eyes, and choose a moderate brightness. A tablet works well propped on a bedside table. If you share a room, an orange screen at low brightness is far less likely to wake someone than a white one. You can also use an orange screen as a warm fill light for video calls in the evening, when a cold white light can look harsh. Pair it with the sleep timer so it switches off after you drift off, and remember that your device's own Night Light or Night Shift setting can make other screens warmer in the evening too.
